Seven Arts

This resulted in the rise of the New Criticism school and debate concerning the intentional fallacy. In the decades since, these ideas have been somewhat lost as the art market has learned to sell limited edition DVDs of video works, invitations to exclusive performance art pieces, and the objects left over from conceptual pieces. Many of these performances  graphics games create works that are only understood by the elite who have been educated as to why an idea or video or piece of apparent garbage may be considered art. The marker of status becomes understanding the work instead of necessarily owning it, and the artwork remains an upper-class activity. Students are offered the occasion to visit one provincial and national destination each in the course of three years spent in the Department. These national study tours are integral towards creating platforms for dialogue beyond the IVS and Karachi.

In sports, gymnastics, figure skating and synchronized swimming are dance disciplines while Martial arts "kata" are often compared to dances. Conceptual art is art wherein the concept or idea involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. The inception of the term in the 1960s referred to a strict and focused practice of  theskfeed idea-based art that often defied traditional visual criteria associated with the visual arts in its presentation as text. Often, if the skill is being used in a common or practical way, people will consider it a craft instead of art. Likewise, if the skill is being used in a commercial or industrial way, it may be considered commercial art instead of fine art. Some art followers have argued that the difference between fine art and applied art has more to do with value judgments made about the art than any clear definitional difference.

Comics are often called the "ninth art" (le neuvième art) in Francophone scholarship, adding to the traditional "Seven Arts". In the field of building architecture, the skills demanded of an architect range from the more complex, such as for a hospital or a stadium, codecoda to the apparently simpler, such as planning residential houses. Many architectural works may be seen also as cultural and political symbols, or works of art. The role of the architect, though changing, has been central to the successful design and implementation of pleasingly built environments in which people live.

The arts are a vehicle through which human beings cultivate distinct social, cultural and individual identities, while transmitting values, impressions, judgments, ideas, visions, spiritual meanings, patterns of life and experiences across time and space. Somewhat in relation to the above, the word art is also used to apply judgments of value, as in such expressions as "that meal was a work of art" , or "the art of deception" . It is this use of the word as a measure of high quality and high value that gives the term its flavor of subjectivity. At the simplest level, a way to determine whether the impact of the object on the senses meets the criteria to be considered art is whether it is perceived to be attractive or repulsive.

Formalism evaluates works on a purely visual level, considering medium and compositional elements as opposed to any reference to realism , context, or content. The fine arts include painting, sculpture, certain graphic arts and architecture. Within social sciences, cultural economists show how video games playing is conducive to the involvement in more traditional art forms and cultural practices, which suggests the complementarity between video games and the arts. The modern distinction between "artistic" and "non-artistic" skills did not develop until the Renaissance.

Though perception is always colored by experience, and is necessarily subjective, it is commonly understood that what is not somehow aesthetically satisfying cannot be art. However, "good" art is not always or even regularly aesthetically appealing to a majority of viewers. In other words, an artist's prime motivation need not be the pursuit of the aesthetic. Also, art often depicts terrible images made for social, moral, or thought-provoking reasons. For example, Francisco Goya's painting depicting the Spanish shootings of 3 May 1808 is a graphic depiction of a firing squad executing several pleading civilians.

Visual Arts

Students are introduced to the essentials of information technology, computer skills, software, and website development that assist them in expanding their vocabulary as visual artists. Taught during the second and third years of study, this course is designed to meet the specific requirements of the Fine Art curriculum. The Computer Skills course aims towards a proficiency in handling different software that enables students to expedite their thought process and develop an independent approach towards original artwork. Taught as any other medium of Fine Art, the Ceramics course offers the uniqueness of undertaking functional and sculptural approaches in art making. Students learn the established methods of working in clay, progressing towards experimentation and exploration of techniques to facilitate their work. As part of their studio course students are expected to read relevant essays on art and write about their work.

The creation of poetry and music was considered to be divinely inspired and was therefore held in high esteem. However, there was no muse identified with the painting and sculpture; ancient Greek culture held these art forms in low social regard, considering work of this sort to be more along the lines of manual labor. Critical evaluations are conducted on a regular basis to help develop an independent body of work in the final year. The Sculpture course in the Department of Fine Art initiates students to traditional skill building methods through the introduction of various materials and the challenges they present. Students learn fundamental methods of carving, modelling, welding and mould making.
